“I think latin spanish musical influence on blues is stronger than most people probably imagine, particularly with regard to the rhythms used in blues and R&B. The Bo Diddley beat is a Latin 3/2 clave, Professor Longhair’s piano is littered with rhumba rhythms. Shuffles are very common in Latin music too. I suspect most of these made their way into the African American musical vocabulary via the Caribbean islands, in the early days of radio, in the same way New Orleans sounds influenced the birth of Ska.”
